Podcast 47: What were we thinking?

Direct MP3 DownloadComing to you from the secret bunker, we bring you our final discussion of Star Trek the Next Generation season 7. Note to future self: don't try to record a podcast the week of Christmas, especially if it is a season ending podcast. Joey and I were able to get it done, but it took a lot out of us. Podcast Christmas Special 2009

Direct MP3 DownloadJoey & I wanted to do something special for Christmas, a tradition we hope to continue for as long as we do this podcast. So he decided that for our inaugural year we would watch A Christmas Carol as presented by TNT in 1999. We assumed that since it had Patrick Stewart playing the title role of Ebeneezer Scrooge that it was sure to be something special. Boy were we wrong about that. It was hammy, disjointed, and frankly 1 piston short of a 4 stroke engine. Well I guess it wasn't completely terrible because there were a few good scenes and it did prompt some good discussion between Joey and I. But for the most part you all can skip watching it.

On a side note, we want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas. We hope that regardless of whatever religion you believe in that this time of year is happy and joyous. Thanks for listening.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:
Joey & Peter admit to siding with Scrooge
    Objectivism vs. Scroogism
Tonight the part of the Ghost of Christmas Past will be played by Liberace
Peter doesn't want to die alone

Podcast 46: Ro, Ro, Ro the spy, traitor to Starfleet

Direct MP3 DownloadWell the good news is that we won't be seeing Ensign Ro Larin in any more episodes of TNG. It's just sad that we had to wait until almost the end of the series before it happened. Listener Jim joins us for the second time and does a great job at helping us to find something worthwhile to talk about for these rather lackluster episodes. This podcast covers episodes 21-24 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 7.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:
    Listener Jim The Noahide
Would you kill Hitler as a baby?
Peter is the Smith family Gin'tak
Captain Picard, you are not the father
    Really lame Ensign Ro episode

Podcast 45: Dances with Wesley

Direct MP3 DownloadAmide a tide of fairly lame episodes we send a fond farewell to Wesley Crusher in this weeks Star Trek the Next Generation Trek West 5 podcast. He provided several opportunities for us to mock him. All the way from "we're from starfleet; we don't lie" to "Maybe I am sick of following rules and regulations!" And as much as I liked to make fun of Wesley, he was an important part of this series. Good luck in your inter-planar travels Wesley. This podcast covers episodes 17-20 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 7.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:
Why aren't people more paranoid about security?
Brent Spiner is great wearing many masks

Podcast 44: So gross

Direct MP3 DownloadThere isn't enough soap in the world for me to ever feel clean again after having to watch the episode Sub Rosa. Having Dr. Crusher get intimately involved with what is essentially a ghost that has been intimate with all of her former female relatives was just disturbing. Shame on you Jeanna F. Gallo. And don't miss Listener Jim's longest comment yet! This podcast covers episodes 13-16 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 7.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:
Peter Nash Day entries and winners: 1st prize Preston, runner up: Skylar and Anne

Podcast Movie Special: Star Trek the Motion Picture

Direct MP3 DownloadI wish I had the time and inclination to write an incredibly long and tedious blog post to go along with this podcast of Star Trek The Motion Picture, but I just don't have the heart to do that too you guys. As much as I really enjoy watching this movie, it is quite boring in a few places. Alright, a lot of parts were boring. But it is such a visually cool sci-fi flick I just have to love it. Plus who wouldn't want to see DeForest Kelly showing his hairy chest and sporting the gold chains?! Aside from all that Joey and I still managed to have a good time discussing.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:
Joey: Friends don't let friends watch Star Trek the Motion Picture
Who wouldn't want Kirk in charge
Worst idea ever: One way jet pack
    The Shatner Pause
My Friend Jon Madsen's TMP podcast

Thanksgiving Greetings!

Joey and I are taking this week off for recording, but we wanted to take a few min and send out a special Thanksgiving message. During this time of thanksgiving most people often look forward to the big feast (or the big game) and pay simple lip service to those items they are grateful for from the previous year. I say all of that because that is typically how I treat it and not just because of my general jaded mistrusting attitude. Despite all of the things that Joey and I like to complain about during our podcast we really have so much that we can be thankful for. Among the normal (house, family, job, friends, etc) this year Joey and I can add the Podcast to our list. But not just the Podcast, you as our listeners. We are so grateful for all of the emails and comments that you have sent in during this our first year of podcasting. You really help to make this a much more interesting process. More than anything we want to make sure that you are included as much as possible in the conversation.

We won't be recording this weekend but we will be posting up the first of our Podcast Movie Specials: Star Trek the Motion Picture. Look for that to be posted up Monday at our normal time. We'll be back on track with our normal podcasting next week. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your loved ones this week.

Sincerely,
Peter & Joey - TW5

Podcast 43: Peter Nash Day

Well, Peter has once again abandoned his own mantra ("The Podcast First and Always") and has left the duty of posting this week's podcast to me. I'm sure he's going to find SOMETHING to complain about regarding my method of doing it, so I'll just say up front: it's your own dang fault, man - YOU'RE the one who left this task in my hands. We are joined this week by my younger brother Aaron, as we cover episodes 9-12 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 7.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:

Podcast 38: Lessons learned

Direct MP3 Download
Alright, so we didn't learn any lessons to change our (or probably anyone else) lives this podcast. But we did learn that no matter how early we start, we still won't end recording our television podcast until 1am. We also learned that even when we say we have nothing to talk about, we still end up with a podcast over 2 hours. We also learned that when we finally get to discussing constitutional stuff in The West Wing we will probably be arguing a lot (as evidenced by our near shouting match on the topic of rights). Finally we are really pleased to have finally put together two promotional spots that we can use to help market us (links for promo 1 and promo 2). We only know of one person willing to do this so far, but it's good to have something put together in case there are others.

There were no guests for this week. This podcast covers episodes 16-20 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 6.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:
    TW5 Promotional spots
The right to die in battle
Should you point out the truth if it will destroy peace?

J. C. Hutchins' "7th Son" In Print!

If you listen to the TrekWest5 podcast, you know we've been promoting the podiobook trilogy "7th Son" for some time now. I'm really glad to announce that as of Oct. 27th, you'll be able to buy this book *in print* (in fact, you can preorder it now). To quote the email JC sent me:

This is huge news for me (the trilogy was also optioned for film development by Warner Bros.), and for podcasting. Considering that 7th Son was rejected by dozens of publishing pros before I released it as a podcast, we have accomplished something extraordinary with its publication.

To celebrate the release, he's announcing a number of new promotions that I wanted to make all of you aware of:

- A brand-new podcast recording of the "print edition" of the novel (with new scenes, twists, and character tweaks)

- A prequel audio short story anthology called 7th Son: 7 Days. (I am currently listening my way through this and am really enjoying it)

- Serialization of the novel in PDF and and the text at Cory Doctorow's BoingBoing.net

There's a lot to like about the 7th Son series of podiobooks, and for those of you not inclined to partake of them in the audio format, I hope you'll pick up a copy of the deadtree edition.

Podcast 37: We Surrender!

Well we were finally able to get back to watching episodes, but could only get through 3 of them in this weeks Star Trek the Next Generation television podcast. You win this round Life. By the end of the evening Joey and I were just too tired to go on any further. I believe that I actually put my head down after our conversation of Tapestry and moaned: "Can we stop now?" Thankfully Joey was just as exhausted, so I didn't feel like a total wimp. We will cover the missed episode next week for Podcast 38. This podcast covers episodes 13-15 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 6.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:

Podcast 35 "Poetry Special"

Well, I promised we'd publish it – and, since I had to make a last-minute trip out of town this weekend, it seemed the best chance we had at putting up some new material for all of you – so here is our "Poetry Special" from Podcast 35. We'd like to thank the following people and the authors of the poets they mentioned. Wherever possible, I've tried to include links to the poets and the poems read – unfortunately, some of the sites linked to are filled with annoying flash ads. We hope you enjoy this as much as we enjoyed recording it.

Podcast 35: Poetry in Podcasting (redo)

Editors note 9-22-09: we are hoping that reposting this will make itunes pick this up.
Well technically we don't actually discuss the poetry in this podcast, but in a separate special release that will be posted later. But we did have quite a lot of fun Friday night. We had long time contributor Aaron come back and join us. While we wouldn't quite describe him as having an air of authenticity about a television podcast, he can be quite funny (either as joke teller or the butt of). And his ratings are different enough from Joey and I to provide some good comparison. Basically if you agree with Aaron, there is something wrong with you. We look forward to having him come back on. This podcast covers episodes 5-8 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 6.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:
    Poetry
    Ode to Spot
    Group Therapy
    Hot chick Olivia d'Abo
    Specialization vs. General Knowledge

oops on file download

Looks like we forgot to set the permissions correctly on our latest upload (podcast 35). But we have remedied the problem and you should now be able to download podcast 35. Sorry for the trouble.

Edited 2009-09-22: Due to the aggressive caching which makes providing all this free podcast infrastructure feasible, your iTunes probably didn't see the fix until early Tuesday morning. Again, terribly sorry, everyone!

Podcast 34: The Sweet Spot of Podcasting

I was so pumped for this Sunday to get here because of the return of the NFL. And due to that, it took Joey and I a while to edit the podcast. So there is a good chance we might have even missed a couple of things. But at least it was also a good start to our latest season of podcasting about Star Trek The Next Generation. My Friend Jon Madsen was able to join us for the last TNG/Original Series crossover episode. This time it was about Captain Montgomery Scott: Scotty. Beam us up to that great warp core in the sky James Doohan, we miss you. This podcast covers episodes 1-4 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 6.

Podcast 33: High Five

Well we bring to a close the best season of TNG so far. It is going to be pretty difficult to beat this one. We gush on and on about the episode The Inner Light, but over all this was a fun podcast for Joey and I to record. We also started a new tradition for the beginning of the podcast: high five. Let's see how long it sticks around for. Due to our secret location we had no guests. This podcast covers episodes 25-26 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 5.

Podcast 32: We are Hugh!

We capped off another long work week for Joey and I with a very fun podcast. We went in to the early hours of Saturday recording, but kept it strong through to the end. I think you will really enjoy the discussion topics this week. We were hoping to have my friend Rhett come and join us for I-Borg, but he was so scared that he made up some lie about having a party at his cabin this weekend. Pretty lame. Happy Birthday, Gene

Had he lived to see this day, Gene Roddenberry would be 88 years old today. While I have taken the occasional opportunity to disagree with some of his politics and philosophy, I wanted to take the opportunity today to say how much I really appreciate what he did.

The act of creation is usually painful - the struggle to bring into this world something that you love is a feeling that I've been very familiar with. Even though nothing I've done has reached the state of acclaim that Mr. Roddenberry's has, I feel I can appreciate what it must have taken from him to bring us things like Star Trek.

Congratulations, well done, and thank you, Gene. I hope you're enjoying your "mission...to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before."

Podcast 30: Shamefully returning to what Joey wants

As Joey likes to put it, the experiment failed. We have moved back to our 4 television episode per podcast format. I was really hoping that we could shorten the podcast length but it seems that it does not matter how many Next Generation television episodes we cover we still seem to end up over 2 hours. Oh well it was worth a try. We were pleased to have Jared pop in on us this week to lend his assistance on Ethics. And we also had lots of listener comments (thanks to Listener Jim, My Friend Jon Madsen, Simon, and Julia). This podcast covers episodes 13-16 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 5.

Podcast 29: I don't remember saying any of this

Out of fear of saying something really stupid we decided that we needed to make sure we had some sort of female presence on this weeks television podcast. We invited a couple of women but only one was able to join us: Katie. And as a result we had a great time. Katie did a fantastic job and we look forward to having her come back on. Podcast 28: Not tonight honey, I have a headache

We geeked out so hard to these episodes that I ended up getting a pretty powerful headache. So by the time we got to the last episode for this podcast we had to turn out the lights in order for me to continue on. Thankfully my friend Jon Madsen was there to help pick up my slack. It was really fun to have an original series cross-over with Leonard Nimoy reprising his role as Spock. Another consequence of our geeking, is that my experiment to reduce podcast length goes right out the window. I guess all I can say is thank goodness we didn't discuss 4 episodes or this might have gone to 4 hours. We almost died recording this one. This podcast covers episodes 7-9 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 5.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:
    JC Hutchins 7th Son Novel

Podcast 27: Providing even more ways for people to not contact us

Well the great experiment of trying to trim podcast time down continues (a little over 2 hours this week). But even more awesome is the fact that we now have a Trek West 5 Twitter hash tag where you can keep up on: the latest TW5 news, chat with other TW5 listeners, find out about upcoming podcast episodes, and possibly get in on the ground floor of cool giveaways. But not so much of that last one. We have also decided to tap in to the wondrous beauties of a Google Phone Number. If you would like to call in and leave a brief (no more than two and a half to three minute) message/comment about the podcast, the episodes, or Joey and Peter just call in to this number: 801-788-4913.

We had no guests, so you are left to enjoy the dulcet tones of Joey and Peter. But once again, Listener Jim comes away with a few doosie comments. Very hilarious. This podcast covers episodes 4-6 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 5.

Various topics discussed in this podcast include:
Do you prefer short or longer podcasts?
New ways to keep up with TW5: Twitter and Google phone number: 801-788-4913
    Writing vs. Verbal communication
Animal sentience? If they aren't sentient then does it matter if we kill them?

If you've listened to Podcast #26, you probably noticed that we only covered three episodes as opposed to our usual slate of four. This was an effort to bring the overall runtime down a little bit, pretty much solely to satisfy Peter. Trek West 5 Podcast 26: New Season, New Sponsors, New Format

We have now arrived at what may be the best season of Star Trek The Next Generation yet, season 5. We also have decided to shake things up and move to a new format where we only discuss 3 episodes as a way of reducing total podcast time. I am not sure how successful we were on this one though, but come on we were talking about Darmok and we had a plethora of guests. We are also proud to announce that we have new sponsors!!! The following websites have now started sponsoring us: RocketWebDesign.com and GetAScent.com. You should definitely take a look. Lastly, we are no longer going to have a weeks delay from the time of recording to podcast posting. So we will be recording on Friday and posting on Monday. Let's see how long that lasts. ;)

We had 3 special guests for this podcast: my friend New York Maria, Aaron, and Jared. Our thanks to them for participating. This podcast covers episodes 1-3 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 5.

Podcast 25: Our silver anniversary... sort of

Well we have come to the end of season 4 and our 25th podcast (if you count the two lost podcasts). This podcast covers episodes 25-26 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 4. I think we must have both been tired, because there was a lot of editing out of long pauses, but it was an awesome wrap-up to the best season of TNG thus far.
